Make no mistake. We are in the midst of a social/cultural storm, some would say a hurricane, the end of which we can not predict and the outcome we can not foresee. For many, not unlike the Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900, the strength and longevity of the storm was unexpected. For others it was predictable and long overdue. It remains to be seen the extent of the related devastation wrought upon the landscape and stalwart institutions.
For traditionalists who cling to the past or even revere it, there is a pervading sense of loss laid against a background of fear. For these storm riders, the future, recently predictable, is suddenly cast into doubt. The foundation of America is fast crumbling as if in a major earthquake that seems to never end.
For progressives, the past is redolent of poverty, exploitation, injustice, suppression, bigotry, racism, discrimination, and a host of other adjectives that bespeak a desperate need for change. For these storm riders, the tragic death of George Floyd was a tipping point that sparked a long smoldering fire into a blaze and ignited disenfranchised people into action.
There comes a time in the pursuit of social reform when voices grow weary, faith in the system is exhausted and the time for more forceful action arrives. It appears that time is now. Historically, the power structure has been impervious to the plight of the underclass and has not willingly surrendered to the forces of change, no matter how rational the arguments or how long suffering the proponents.
The ruts of today are plowed deep into the road to tomorrow. Previous struggles to excise the wheels of progress have proven arduous and prolonged. Movements such as those to abolish slavery, organize labor, secure women’s rights, ensure civil rights, protect voting rights and to end the war in Viet Nam have ultimately resolved amidst a milieu of violence.
Where can we look for our salvation? A return to the status quo is not possible or even desirable. A common vision of the future that is shared by a consensus of Americans is nonexistent. We have lost confidence in institutions of government to respond effectively to any issues of major significance. Foundational myths such as the “American Dream”, “Blind Justice” and “American Exceptionalism” have been exposed as fairy tales. The underbelly of law enforcement has been laid bare and it is not a pretty site. In our capitalistic society everything is a commodity from sex to medical care and sold to anyone who can pay the asking price. We are divided on issues, such as abortion, where there is no common ground and civil discourse has been abandoned in an environment where facts are irrelevant and emotions drive conclusions.
We are aboard the ship of state and the captain is nowhere on the bridge. Fellow passengers joist for a position behind the wheel but none can hold for long. There is no land in sight and the wind and waves toss the ship about without purpose or direction. Can anything be done? Who or what can save us?
